Introduction
    Tuina is a kind of external therapy of traditional Chinese medicine, which represents an important part of TCM. Traditional Chinese Tuina is frequently-used in clinical treatment, as the most representative treatment for familiar symptoms , as well as the “green therapy”of preventive treatment of TCM. Now it has been widely recognized and accepted.
    Tuina is a clinical subject, which is under the instruction of Chinese medicine and modern science theory to elaborate and research the method, rule and principle for prevention and cure by manipulation and exercise. As an important part of TCM’s great treasure, clinical features of Tuina is broad indications and strict contraindications while its basic characteristic is manipulative therapy. This reflects Tuina is clinical therapeutic course and skills course. Traditional Chinese Tuina is frequently used in clinical treatment, as the most representative treatment for familiar symptoms, as well as the “green therapy” of preventive treatment of TCM. Now it has been widely recognized and accepted. At present, the cultivating scale of senior Chinese Tuina talents is still in short supply, compared with the social demand.
    Tuina, as the therapeutic method, is the oldest medical skill in the history; while as a independent subject, it forms in modern age. Since 1950s, the development of subject construction has gone through more than half a century. Now Tuina course includes many secondary disciplines, such as Tuina manipulation, Tuina therapy, Tuina experimentation, Tuina philology, etc.
    “Tuina” as an clinical specialized course, is the main course of traditional Chinese medicine major, clinical Chinese medicine integrated with Western medicine major ,rehabilitation therapeutics major, nursing major in the TCM colleges and universities. It begins every year in all kinds of students at all levels.
    “Tuina” takes skill as carrier, highlights the importance of cultivating clinical comprehensive dialectical thinking ability, develops skill of manipulation, masters common diseases and massage indications, as well as chooses the appropriate method so that it can improve clinical effect and cultivate compound talents who has diagnosis and treatment skills as solid foundation, wide range of knowledge, TCM clinical comprehensive thinking ability and human manipulation.
 
Course Development and Contribution
    Manipulation Teaching and Research Office of Shanghai University of TCM Affiliated Yueyang TCM-Integrated Hospital was established in the year 1958,born out of Manipulation Course Team of SHUTCM. The Party and government established the first Manipulation Educational Base, Manipulation Class in Shanghai Health School, in detainment of TCM manipulation near extinction. The first manipulation textbook, TCM Manipulation,was published the same year,which delimited the connotation and extension of manipulation.
    To promote the development of manipulation education and to enhance teaching ability, Manipulation School of SHUTCM opened up 1st Manipulation Tutor-training class entrusted by Ministry of Education. Teachers from different area of the country and different school picked up experience of three important schools in Shanghai and shared theirs with each other. The Manipulation School also founded the first TCM manipulation clinic in the country in consideration of clinical training, cultivated a batch of manipulators and inherited and filed academic experience.
    5th edition of Manipulation,edited by Yu Dafang from Manipulation Teaching and Research Office,was widely used in other colleges. The 2nd Manipulation Tutor-training class admitted the first session of master degree candidate in the country and Shen Guoquan became the first postgraduate of manipulation. SHUTCM was approved the first doctoral degree for manipulation and Fang Min was the first manipulation doctor in China, started post-doctoral mobile station inland.
